DHEC dental screening on November 17

Every 5 years, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) conducts a statewide dental screening to obtain a picture of the dental health of Kindergarten and 3rd-grade children in South Carolina. DHEC uses the findings of the Oral Health Statewide Screening to evaluate the State’s preventive oral health programs, determine the need for additional dental programs, and describe the oral health of South Carolina’s children.

The screening is conducted by dental professionals who volunteer and must complete a certified training. The training ensures that the screeners’ methods and data reporting are consistent. Kindergarten and 3rd grade students in randomly selected schools are screened. This random selection ensures a broad base for the assessment. It is important to screen as many students as possible, so please note the PHES screening will be done on Friday, November 17. Any parent or guardian who does not wish to have their child participate may opt out of the screening. Information and forms will be sent home on Tuesday, November 7.
